Ardsley Train Station Historical Marker

140 years ago the area that is now known as the Village of Ardsley looked very different from how it looks today. Back then it was known as the hamlet of Ashford and it was predominantly farmland. The population in 1800 was less than 400 people while the 2020 census was above 5,000. The most significant event that helped transform the Village of Ardsley from a farming community to a residential community was the arrival of passenger railroad service in December, 1880. Now people could live in Ardsley and commute to their jobs in New York City.

In April, 2021 the Ardsley Historical Society applied for an historical marker to recognize this significant event in Ardsley’s history. In November the application was approved along with a grant from the William C. Pomeroy Foundation to purchase the marker. Recently that marker was installed at the entrance to the South County Trailway from Elm Street. This is near the original location of the Ardsley Train Station. A dedication ceremony was held on Saturday, April 30, 2022.

Comprehensive Plan Theme: BUILD

"4e. ADEQUATELY PROTECT HISTORIC AND CULTURAL RESOURCES TO PRESERVE ARDSLEY’S UNIQUE CHARACTER, HERITAGE, AND IDENTITY AND TO BENEFIT FUTURE GENERATIONS Taking steps to safeguard the Village’s historic and cultural assets maintains the Village’s distinctive charm. Ardsley can inventory all its historic features, review currently unprotected historical properties and assess their eligibility for protection, ensure any zoning amendments adequately protect the Village’s historic and cultural assets, and find ways to accentuate these features."

Implementation Action: Embrace Ardsley’s history by highlighting known historic sites, assets or properties to the extent reasonable.
